The use of a Bosun’s chair has increased dramatically in recent decades. What was once almost exclusive to exterior building maintenance is now common place for new construction. Originally a tool used on ships (the origin of “boat” in Boatswain), now used to provide a seat for those workers who perform their jobs while suspended by rope.
It provides a safe platform for those who are trained, who pre-plan every step and those who are always watching for changes in their plan. Mother nature becomes a major factor in determining when it is safe and when it is time to wait, to use a Bosun’s chair.
A plan is needed to use a Bosun’s chair. Not just a fall protection plan, a site specific Bosun’s chair work plan that includes, but is not limited to, details on the anchors, lines, control zones, inspections, connections and rescue. Time spent planning really pays off for this critical task.
We write the plans, we teach the course.
