Every Tuesday – Fall Protection training in Burnaby, BC

The CORE of Fall Protection is taught in our Burnaby training center every Tuesday

Why do we do what we do?

Most of us work to enjoy the things that give us pleasure outside of work —paying the bills, putting food on the table, and having the toys and the freedom to do the things we love.

The requirement to recertify every three years for mandatory courses is a challenging pill to swallow. As an instructor and a longtime frontline worker, I see the frustration of having to be present, repeating material that participants may already know, and, in many cases, have more working knowledge than the instructor! The presentation style is often “canned,” not tailored to participants, and instructors may not encourage feedback or interaction, which adds to the frustration.

The reality is that the legislative custodians (WSBC) of OHS regulations are exercising due diligence by setting a frequency for recertification and passing it down to employers, who must ensure their employees meet the requirements of the OHS regulations.

Successful courses are administered with a pragmatic approach to participant inclusion. The course curriculum needs to meet established expectations to ensure consistent information for certification. WSBC exercises due diligence through industry inspections and the review of SIF (serious injury and fatality) statistics. Employers demonstrate their diligence in mandatory training by maintaining effective health and safety programs that include current employee certification and training.

An instructor's challenge is to find ways to engage participants with the course material in a meaningful way. There is an expectation to cover all required learning objectives that meet the required regulations. Successful instructors engage participants by addressing why meeting the administrative requirements is meaningful, at a personal level.

Training and certificate requirements for industry and job positions are a part of working life. Maintaining your certification by attending training aligned with the region's OHS requirements is no different from keeping your driver's license current. The goal should be to determine how we can all contribute to making the training relevant, meaningful, and memorable in how we apply the information to our respective jobs. The goal is to make sure we, and those next to us, go home safe, healthy, and able to enjoy the reason we are at work in the first place – to enjoy life and the things that bring us joy away from work.
